How to Set Up Your Desk to Prevent Wrist and Hand Pain

Your Desk Might Be Working Against You

Most wrist and hand discomfort doesn’t start with one dramatic moment. It builds slowly, hour after hour, from a keyboard positioned too high or a mouse that forces your wrist into an awkward bend. Small angles, repeated thousands of times a day, add up fast, and most people don’t notice until the ache is already there every afternoon.

“A lot of hand and wrist pain traces back to the neck and shoulders, not just the desk,” says Dr. Nick. “We look at the whole picture before recommending changes.”

Keyboard and Mouse Position

Your wrists should stay level, not bent up or down, while typing. If your keyboard sits too high, your shoulders creep up toward your ears without you noticing (a habit that strains far more than just your hands). Keep your mouse close to your keyboard so you’re not reaching, and rest your palm lightly rather than leaning into it. A wrist rest can help, but only if it’s used to pause on, not to lean your full weight into while you type.

Chair Height and Screen Placement

Your elbows should sit close to a ninety-degree angle when typing. If your chair is too low, you’ll naturally bend your wrists upward to reach the keys, which adds pressure exactly where you don’t want it. Your monitor should sit at eye level too, since a screen that’s too low pulls your neck forward and adds strain that eventually travels down into your hands. Even an inch or two of adjustment may change how your whole arm feels by the end of the day.

Give Your Hands a Break

Even a well-set-up desk can’t undo hours of nonstop typing. A quick thirty-second stretch every hour, opening and closing your fingers or gently flexing your wrists, keeps circulation moving and tension from building. Setting a reminder on your phone is a simple way to make sure it actually happens.
